Andi Dorfman is on the mend after suffering postpartum complications following the birth of her first baby . Less than a week after welcoming her and husband Blaine Hart 's daughter Harper Bell Hart , the Bachelorette alum was hospitalized and underwent surgery to remove hematomas, or collections of blood that form outside blood vessels. "Welp, we're back! This time for Mama," Andi wrote on her Instagram Stories Dec. 27. "After getting home, I was in a ton of pain and it was getting worse by the day. Despite the internet saying recovery takes time, I still felt something was wrong and finally after trying every home remedy, called my doctors and they told me to come right in." The 37-year-old continued, "Turns out I had one large and one small hematoma that were the cause of the pain. Within a few hours, we were at the hospital and prepped for surgery. A very straightforward procedure but still pretty terrifying having a 6 day old baby (plus loads of hormones still lurking)." Andi said she felt "some guilt" worrying about herself instead of her daughter after giving birth. "But I realized," the Bachelor Nation star continued, "she's no good if I'm no good." Andi, who announced Harper's birth Dec. 22 and also previously shared she went through 28 hours of labor before welcoming her, also noted a valuable lesson she learned from her postpartum experience. "No matter how clueless you are about motherhood," she began, "you still know your body best! Listen to it! Yes, recovery is tough and everyone is different but your instincts are valid (and probably right)." The Bachelor alum later shared a video of her husband playing with their daughter, captioning it, "When Daddy is on duty." Blaine had praised his wife's strength on social media days before she revealed her postpartum complications and surgery. "Needless to say, feeling extra grateful and blessed this holiday season. Thankful for our growing family but most importantly to an incredibly loving, caring and strong wife (and now mother) in @andidorfman," he wrote on Instagram Dec. 25. "Harper and I are extremely lucky to have you as our navigational beacon. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!" Blaine and Andi married in Italy in 2023. Read on for updates on the love lives of more Bachelor Nation stars... Joan Vassos & Chock Chapple Status: Engaged After appearing on the first-ever season of The Golden Bachelor and leaving Gerry Turner 's season early, Joan Vassos handed out the roses on the debut season of The Golden Bachelorette . It was there that she met and got engaged to contestant Chock Chapple . "We are living proof that no matter what life throws at you that there is still hope, even at our age," Joan said on The Golden Bachelorette 's November 2024 finale before Chock proposed in Bora Bora . "I waited 'til this moment in this amazing location to tell you that I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to wake up next to you in the morning, and I want to kiss you when I go to bed at night." Jenn Tran & Devin Strader Status: Split During the season 21 finale of The Bachelorette , it looked like The Bachelor alum Jenn Tran was finally getting her happy ending with her final pick Devin Strader . But Jenn, 26, revealed on After the Final Rose back in September that Devin, 28, gave her the cold shoulder as soon as the cameras stopped rolling. "He was making bold proclamations of love and then suddenly the next day he was like, nothing and he denied ever being in love," Jenn told host Jesse Palmer during the Sept. 3 episode. "All the promises he had made to me, all of the love that he had wanted to give to me wasn't there anymore." Drama continued to play out when Devin shared a 13-minute video recounting his side of the story to Instagram, where in addition to taking "accountability” he shared insight into why he ended the relationship in a 15-minute phone call. While Jenn alleged he dumped her during the call in August, he claimed that Jenn demanded to know what was wrong as he tried to find a way to break the news in person. "I didn't really know what else to do," he explained, noting he had been waiting to tell her in person. "She kind of forced my hand." Since then, Jenn waltzed over to Dancing With the Stars and possibly into the heart of her partner Sasha Farber as they have continued to spark romance rumors since their Oct. 29 elimination. Victoria Fuller & Greg Grippo Status: Split In November 2022, Greg Grippo (one of Katie Thurston 's suitors on The Bachelorette a year prior) joined Victoria Fuller on the season eight finale of Bachelor in Paradise . There, the two announced that they were in a relationship. In April 2024, he revealed the two had called it quits . Status: Split Before Victoria Fuller and Greg Grippo went public with their romance on the finale of Bachelor in Paradise 's eighth season, she and her costar Johnny DePhillipo ended their engagement. Theresa Nist & Gerry Turner Status: Divorced Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist got engaged in November 2023 during the finale of the inaugural Golden Bachelor and tied the knot in a January 2024 televised ceremony. However, three months after their nuptials, the couple announced that they were breaking up. “Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations and we've looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth," Gerry said during a joint appearance on Good Morning America with Theresa April 2024. “We've come to the conclusion mutually that it's probably time for us to dissolve our marriage." They reached a divorce settlement in June 2024, according to court records reviewed by E! News. Joey Graziadei & Kelsey Anderson Status: Engaged After courting 32 potential brides , tennis pro Joey Graziadei found his perfect match in project manager Kelsey Anderson . "I can't wait another minute to tell you that I love you," Joey told his final rose recipient, before getting down on one knee during his season's March 2024 finale . "There is something about you. You have this infectious energy that makes me smile. It's a feeling I've never had before." Imagining his forever with the Louisiana native, he continued, "I have known for a while that I've wanted to have a beautiful life, but I truly didn't know how beautiful that life could be until I met you." Kat Izzo & John Henry Spurlock Status: Split Though underwater welder John Henry Spurlock (one of Charity Lawson 's suitors) and nurse Kat Izzo (she competed for Zach Shallcross ' heart) didn't connect until midway through season nine of Bachelor in Paradise , they were willing to dive into the deep end. "I'm going to try something a little different," he said while offering up an Ascher cut Neil Lane diamond. "I'm following my heart today. My heart's telling me that you are amazing, you are everything that I'm looking for." But days after the finale aired, the duo revealed they no longer saw forever in each other's eyes. "While our paths are taking different directions due to our career goals not aligning," they wrote in a joint Instagram post, "we are grateful for the love and support we’ve received from our family, friends, and Bachelor Nation." Eliza Isichei & Aaron Bryant Status: Split Despite her nerves about a Paradise engagement, an all-dressed-in-white Eliza Isichei (one of Clayton Echard 's exes) happily accepted Aaron Bryant 's oceanfront proposal. Touched by the software salesman's decision to reach out to her mom for her blessing, she gushed, "I knew I was not in control of what was going to come out of my mouth." The finale's coda acknowledged Charity's ex and marketing manager Eliza had hit some bumps after returning from Mexico, and days later they announced they had officially ended their engagement. "Tricky emotions watching it all unfold," he wrote on Instagram December 2023. "We’re leading our amicable split with nothing but positivity and mutual respect for one another." Aven Jones & Kylee Russell Status: Split Though postpartum nurse Kylee Russell lamented boyfriend Aven Jones ' unwillingness to get down on bended knee—a move he was purportedly prepared to make while romancing Bachelorette Rachel Recchia —she ultimately accepted Aven's Paradise proposal to "get out of here and make it work." Though that meant her planned engagement gown remained packed, "I just had to do what I felt was right," she said. "Love is all about taking risk." Two days after their December 2023 finale aired, she announced on her Instagram Stories that their relationship had "dissolved due to multiple infidelities." Aven later issued an apology to Kylee, writing, "I have made major mistakes in the relationship and hurt someone who was very close to me." Charity Lawson & Dotun Olubeko Status: Engaged "I am happy with how this season turns out!" Charity Lawson teased to E! News, a statement that way undersold her August 2023 finale. Dropping to one knee, integrative medicine specialist Dotun Olubeko proclaimed their love to be "perfect," asking the child and family therapist, "Would you do me the honor of turning this fairytale into a reality?" While their happily ever after awaits—the pair said they're considering a 2025 or 2026 wedding—the Georgia native will first take a spin through the Dancing With the Stars ballroom. "All right, baby," Dotun told Charity on The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose . "So I know you like to cut up, you like to dance and you like to get down. You know that we've talked about this—about how amazing this opportunity would be. And I am so happy to be the one to tell you that you're gonna be on Dancing With the Stars ! Baby, let's go!" Zach Shallcross & Kaity Biggar Status: Engaged Zach shall get his happy ending. Despite more than a few Fantasy Suite-related stumbles, Zach Shallcross ended season 27 in March 2023 down on one knee . "I am so in love with you," he told travel nurse Kaity Biggar . "You are my world. The love I feel for you is something I could have never imagined." In July 2023, the Texas-based duo made an even bigger step in their journey, with Kaity sharing on Instagram , "Officially roommates." They're currently planning their October 2025 vows. Status: Split Ah, Mom and Dad. Though they left BIP season seven hand-in-Neil-Lane-diamond-free-hand, Danielle Maltby , who lost her fiancé to a drug overdose years before she competed on Nick Viall 's season, and single dad Michael Allio (he shares 7-year-old son James with his late wife) seemed slated for Bachelor Nation couple goals status. But a year after Maltby relocated from Nashville to be with Allio in Ohio, he confirmed they'd split. "We both threw a lot into this relationship and it's really awful when it doesn't work out," Allio said on a September 2023 episode of Jason Tartick 's Trading Secrets podcast . "When things don't work out, when you realize that love is there, but you're not necessarily compatible, you mourn the loss, not of just that person and that friend in your life, but also the future that you had envisioned." Status: Split "I will love you until the end of time. I will love you until my last breath and I want to start forever with you," Brandon Jones proclaimed while proposing to "best friend" Serene Russell on season seven of Paradise . Alas, their journey was cut short. Five months after their engagement aired, Brandon (a runner-up on Michelle Young 's season) and Serene (who romanced Clayton Echard ) announced they had split in a joint May 2023 statement. "We have tried to work privately on our relationship which has been incredibly challenging in the public eye," they wrote on Instagram. "This has been immensely hard to accept and painful, as there is a lot of love between the two of us. We are deeply hurting and can only ask that there be no hate." Status: Split Pilot Rachel's engagement to general contractor Tino Franco stalled when he kissed another woman while their 2022 season was still airing. "I do not stand by what I did at all," he said on The Viall Files . "It was not cool. It wasn't fair to Rachel, and it haunts me daily still. It's something I'm ashamed of and certainly wish I could have done it differently like a million times over." Status: Split Well, it was certainly a journey. Susie Evans initially rejected Bachelor Clayton Echard 's overtures during the 2022 finale only to reunite with him off-camera...and then split once again six months later . But the L.A.-based videographer insists their breakup was for the right reasons . "The people around me could see that my sparkle had dulled and I was far from thriving," she wrote in a November 2022 post for her blog "Susie Was Like." She acknowledged they "had joyous moments often, but deep down I was struggling and felt misaligned with the best version of me." Susie went on to date Bachelor Nation member Justin Glaze , before the couple announced they had also broken up in August 2024. Status: Split Minnesota elementary school teacher Michelle accepted a Neil Lane sparkler from Texas-based sales exec Nayte Olukoya —and a $200,000 check from producers to put toward their future home. But, ultimately, the pair just didn't have the right foundation, announcing their breakup six months after their season's finale aired in December 2021. Though he said on The Viall Files , "There was lots of ups and downs, lots of arguments, lots of fights and just not really clicking, not really seeing eye-to-eye," Nayte acknowledged that not having that final split conversation in person was "a dick move." Michelle started dating Jack Leius in 2023, and they announced their engagement the following year. Status: Split Viewers fully got onboard with Maurissa Gunn and Riley Christian 's vision of a future filled with sweet Sunday mornings. But ultimately the BIP season seven duo only got a couple dozen weekends together. "We have decided to go our separate ways," patient coordinator Maurissa (who romanced Peter Weber ) and attorney Riley (one of Tayshia Adams ' suitors) announced in a joint January 2022 statement. "Never did we imagine this, but we've come to a point where we both need to work on ourselves." Demi Burnett & Kristian Haggerty Status: Split Bachelor Nation's first same-sex couple got engaged on season six of Bachelor in Paradise but announced their 2019 split on Halloween. "What has always been at the forefront of our relationship is love and care for one another. Our priority is doing what is best for us. With a heavy heart full of love for one another we have decided it is best for us to take a step back from our relationship," they said in a joint statement posted on Instagram. "We ultimately want what is best for us in the long run and for us right now, that means being apart and growing individually." Noah Erb & Abigail Heringer Status: Engaged Paradise lost? Not quite. Though Noah Erb and Abigail Heringer broke up in Mexico during the BIP 's seventh season, they realized they could see forever in each other's eyes. Initially settling in San Diego, the travel nurse (who competed for Tayshia's heart) and the financial manager (who received Matt James ' first impression rose) recently purchased a place in his hometown of Tulsa. "About to enter our Chip and Joanna Gaines era because your girl bought her very first house!!!" Abigail wrote on Instagram in July 2023. "Excited to start our next chapter and for all the memories we'll create here!!" Starting with a few wedding plans. Ahead of their move, Noah proposed at a beachfront San Diego home in August 2023. Status: Married Never hurts to have a little practice run. While planning their September 2023 vows, Serena Pitt (a finalist on Matt James' season) and Joe Amabile (the Chicago grocery store owner who found fame after Becca Kufrin sent him home night one in 2018) decided to just do the damn thing at City Hall near their New York City digs, roughly one year after leaving Paradise engaged. "JUST MARRIED !!" Serena, now hosting the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast with her husband, captioned the October 2022 video. "We are still having a wedding this September but who doesn't want to get married twice!" Kenny Braasch & Mari Pepin Status: Married "Mari, I am f--king so in love with you," boy band manager Kenny Braasch said as he slipped that Neil Lane diamond onto Mari Pepin 's finger on the 2021 Paradise finale. "And I literally, like, I can't see my life without you." So the Maryland beauty queen, who initially charmed Bachelor Matt, moved to Kenny's native Chicago and set about planning their forever. And before she and Kenny (eliminated by Tayshia Adams in week five) wed in a 65-guest oceanfront ceremony in Puerto Rico in November 2023, they made their love permanent, getting inked with matching tattoos during a May 2023 trip to the Bahamas. Status: Married Former Bachelorette Becca and Thomas Jacobs (one of Katie Thurston's suitors) got together on Bachelor in Paradise season seven in 2021, broke up on the show, then reconciled after production wrapped. In May 2022, they announced they were engaged, and that Becca proposed. "I hope that other people can now feel empowered and say it's okay to bend the rules," she told E! News . The real estate agent returned the favor that October. In September 2023, the two welcomed their first child , son Benson. Wrote Becca on Instagram , "No amount of words can begin to capture the amount of love and awe we have over this tiny man." Though she's awfully fond of her 6-foot-6 guy as well. Weeks after bringing home Benson, the pair wed in a spontaneous Oct. 13 ceremony. Status: Split On The Bachelorette 's season 17 finale in 2021, Katie got engaged to Blake Moynes . The pair first declared their love for one another during their overnight date, which involved a paintball excursion, a cowboy tub and a conversation under the stars. Getting down on one knee, Blake told Katie, "You deserve the world, and I'm excited to support you and be there for you every day moving forward." Three months after the proposal aired, the couple announced their split . They explained in matching statements, "We are so grateful for the moments we shared together and the entire journey that has unfolded this year, but we ultimately have concluded that we are not compatible as life partners, and it is the most caring choice for both of us to move forward independently." She is now engaged to comedian Jeff Arcuri . Rachael Kirkconnell & Matt James Status: Dating In the years since Matt and graphic designer Rachael Kirkconnell left his 2021 season together (then briefly split and eventually reunited), they've faced many a breakup rumor. But, yes , they're still sweet on each other. "I think everybody needs to take a break from social media," he exclusively told E! News at a July 18 Baskin-Robbins event. "Our lives are lived so much in front of our phones that when anybody steps out of being on their phone 24/7, people think it's the end of the world." Marriage remains the end-game for the L.A.-based pair. "I think the good thing about our relationship is we go at our own pace," the First Impressions: Off Screen Conversations With a Bachelor on Race, Family, and Forgiveness author told E! News in 2022 . "And you've seen with other couples—they force the engagement and they're not together anymore. So, I think what we got is a working recipe and we're gonna get there." Status: Split After stepping in to complete Clare Crawley 's 2020 season of The Bachelorette , Tayshia met and fell in love with Zac Clark . Though they left her season engaged, the former Bachelorette lead-turned-co-host later revealed that their relationship had some ups and downs. "It's hard to be in a new relationship and then kind of go away for a couple of weeks, you know what I mean? And this is me being real and honest," she said on The Ben and Ashley I. Almost Famous podcast in August 2021. She continued, "I think after that, it was kinda like we need to remember why we were with each other. And I think that that's absolutely normal." In November 2021, E! News confirmed the two had gone their separate ways. Status: Split Clare fell head over heels for Dale Moss during season 16 of The Bachelorette . In fact, the two were engaged by the fourth episode . The surprises didn't stop there as, weeks after Clare's replacement Tayshia nabbed an engagement of her own , Dale took to social media and revealed his love story with the hair dresser was already over. The pair sparked reconciliation rumors a month later when they were spotted together. Fast forward to July 2021, after several reunions, and Clare and Dale were fully back together —ring and all. But that September, the two called it quits again. Clare is now happily married to Ryan Dawkins and they're expecting their first daughter together . Status: Split After his brief engagement to winner Hannah Ann Sluss and then subsequent split from runner-up Madison Prewett , fans were hopeful that the third time would be the charm for Peter. Alas, his romance with The Bachelor season 24 standout Kelley Flanagan wasn't meant to be, the pilot sharing on New Year's Eve 2020 that their nine-month relationship was grounded . "While our relationship was filled with countless beautiful memories, our relationship simply didn't work out in the end," Pete posted to Instagram. "Kelley is someone I will always have a special love for." The pair attempted to take flight once more in 2022, before revealing this past May that their romance had reached its final destination . Status: Split Following the dramatic 2020 finale , the couple announced on Instagram that they'd no longer be pursuing a relationship . "Madi and I have mutually decided not to pursue our relationship any further," Peter wrote. "Believe me this was not easy for either of us to be ok with, but after a lot of honest conversations, we have agreed that this is what makes most sense for the two of us. The love and respect I have for Madi will continue to endure." Madi added in her statement, "I will always love and respect him. I am convinced our paths were meant to cross and we are both better because they did." Status: Split Peter and Hannah Ann were briefly engaged during season 24 of The Bachelor . Sadly, during part two of the finale, it was revealed that the couple was struggling a month into their exclusive relationship. Specifically, Hannah Ann was blindsided over Peter's lingering feelings for Madison. "All I've ever asked for, is for someone to give me their whole heart like I'm giving mine to them. And you took away my first engagement," she expressed before giving back her ring . "You took that away from me. 'Cause I trusted you, and that's what you have continued to ask me to do. 'Be patient with me. Have faith in me.'" Status: Married They've come a long way since their #vanlife days. Though Dean Unglert (one of Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay 's finalists) and Caelynn Miller-Keyes , who romanced Colton Underwood , split during season six of Paradise in 2019, they've been cruising together ever since. Engaged in 2022 , the former beauty queen wed her Help! We Suck at Being Newlyweds podcat cohost at a camp-themed affair in the Colorado mountains Sept. 23. "I just love him so much," Caelynn gushed to E! News ahead of the vows. "I'm just so excited to be marrying someone who's such a good person, who makes me laugh every single day even if I'm upset. I think our life together is gonna be really fun."Gophers football adds Nebraska wideout Malachi Coleman via portal2 roulette wheel online

Friday, December 20, 2024 Accelya, a prominent player in the airline technology sphere, revealed impressive growth in New Distribution Capability (NDC) transactions for the year 2024. During the period from Black Friday to Travel Tuesday, NDC transactions surged by 19% compared to the same timeframe in 2023. Additionally, during this period, corporate travel bookings through Accelya’s network of Travel Management Companies soared by 123% year-over-year. Moreover, Accelya’s airline partners experienced a robust increase, with NDC transactions rising by over 40% on Black Friday alone. This growth underscores the escalating importance of NDC in the airline industry, which aims to tap into the $45 billion retail opportunity highlighted in recent McKinsey research. Sam Gilliland , CEO of Accelya, comments, “Our strong year-on-year momentum highlights how NDC is transforming the travel ecosystem for the better. At its core, NDC enhances the traveler experience by offering greater choice and options. It empowers airlines to take control of their retailing, delivering richer, more customized offers. Travel sellers, in turn, can provide a broader offering that drive higher conversion rates for ancillaries and foster competitive benefit.” Accelya facilitates over half of the world’s NDC transactions. Its FLX ONE platform, an enhancement of the well-established FLX system and launched in October, is capable of creating more than 30 billion unique offers each day. This platform supports the expanding scope of NDC and advanced retailing technologies, providing a seamless end-to-end process from Offer and Order to Settle and Delivery. Hosted on Amazon Web Services, FLX ONE integrates cloud-native features with extensive retail knowledge, empowering airlines to optimize performance during high-demand periods and more. Sam Gilliland continued “Accelya is dedicated to empowering airlines, travel agencies, and TMCs to unlock growth through new revenue streams and retailing opportunities. As we move into 2025, we remain focused on delivering next-generation distribution strategies and modernizing airline retailing consistent with IATA standards. Travelers increasingly expect booking and managing a flight to be as effortless as using Amazon or Uber, and we’re committed to enabling that a reality for them and our partners.”
NEW YORK — The brooding waltz was carefully composed on a sheet of music roughly the size of an index card. The brief, moody number also bore an intriguing name, written at the top in cursive: “Chopin.” A previously unknown work of music penned by the European master Frederic Chopin appears to have been found at the Morgan Library & Museum in Manhattan. The untitled and unsigned piece is on display this month at the opulently appointed institution, which had once been the private library of financier J.P. Morgan. A previously unknown musical manuscript, possibly by Frederic Chopin, is held in a display case after it was discovered at The Morgan Library & Museum on Nov. 13 in New York. Robinson McClellan, the museum curator who uncovered the manuscript, said it's the first new work associated with the Romantic era composer to be discovered in nearly a century. But McClellan concedes that it may never be known whether it is an original Chopin work or merely one written in his hand. The piece, set in the key of A minor, stands out for its “very stormy, brooding opening section” before transitioning to a melancholy melody more characteristic of Chopin, McClellan explained. “This is his style. This is his essence,” he said during a recent visit to the museum. “It really feels like him.” McClellan said he came across the work in May as he was going through a collection from the late Arthur Satz, a former president of the New York School of Interior Design. Satz acquired it from A. Sherrill Whiton Jr., an avid autograph collector who had been director of the school. McClellan then worked with experts to verify its authenticity. The paper was found to be consistent with what Chopin favored for manuscripts, and the ink matched a kind typical in the early 19th century when Chopin lived, according to the museum. But a handwriting analysis determined the name “Chopin” written at the top of the sheet was penned by someone else. Born in Poland, Chopin was considered a musical genius from an early age. He lived in Warsaw and Vienna before settling in Paris, where he died in 1849 at the age of 39, likely of tuberculosis. A previously unknown musical manuscript, possibly by Frederic Chopin, is seen in a display case after it was discovered at The Morgan Library & Museum, Nov. 13 in New York. He’s buried among a pantheon of artists at the city’s famed Père Lachaise Cemetery, but his heart, pickled in a jar of alcohol, is housed in a church in Warsaw, in keeping with his deathbed wish for the organ to return to his homeland. Artur Szklener, director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, the Polish capital city where the composer grew up, agreed that the document is consistent with the kinds of ink and paper Chopin used during his early years in Paris. Musically, the piece evokes the “brilliant style” that made Chopin a luminary in his time, but it also has features unusual for his compositions, Szklener said. “First of all, it is not a complete work, but rather a certain musical gesture, a theme laced with rather simple piano tricks alluding to a virtuoso style," Szklener explained in a lengthy statement released after the document was revealed last month. He and other experts conjecture the piece could have been a work in progress. It may have also been a copy of another's work, or even co-written with someone else, perhaps a student for a musical exercise. Jeffrey Kallberg, a University of Pennsylvania music professor and Chopin expert who helped authenticate the document, called the piece a “little gem” that Chopin likely intended as a gift for a friend or wealthy acquaintance. “Many of the pieces that he gave as gifts were short – kind of like ‘appetizers’ to a full-blown work,” Kallberg said in an email. “And we don’t know for sure whether he intended the piece to see the light of day because he often wrote out the same waltz more than once as a gift.” David Ludwig, dean of music at The Juilliard School, a performing arts conservatory in Manhattan, agreed the piece has many of the hallmarks of the composer’s style. “It has the Chopin character of something very lyrical and it has a little bit of darkness as well,” said Ludwig, who was not involved in authenticating the document. But Ludwig noted that, if it's authentic, the tightly composed score would be one of Chopin’s shortest known pieces. The waltz clocks in at under a minute long when played on piano, as many of Chopin’s works were intended. “In terms of the authenticity of it, in a way it doesn’t matter because it sparks our imaginations,” Ludwig said. “A discovery like this highlights the fact that classical music is very much a living art form.” The Chopin reveal comes after the Leipzig Municipal Libraries in Germany announced in September that it uncovered a previously unknown piece likely composed by a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in its collections. Christmas music has a long and storied history beginning centuries ago with pagan rituals. Those traditions evolved with St. Francis of Assisi’s Nativity plays in the 13th century, and survived Puritan rule when many Christmas traditions and celebrations were banned during part of the 17th century. Traveling minstrels spread original songs before the invention of the printing press in 1440 ushered in an era of texts that served as the foundation for some of the most beloved Christmas songs. These tunes would be shared in the form of poetry and hymns printed on broadsides . Today, Christmas music runs the gamut from silly to revolutionary. Songs range from grandmothers getting trampled by reindeer to those based on the work of a Romantic-period poet. Who knew that the catchy tune of Wenceslas, the king with the funny name, is a reverent song about the patron saint of the Czech Republic? Or perhaps it would surprise readers to discover that “Silent Night” was designated as an item of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. These songs we know by heart and hear so often have rich histories rooted in things like war, religion, social reform, and slavery. Stacker compiled a list of Christmas songs released before 1920 and explored the origins of these pieces. This list includes Christmas carols, famous instrumentals, popular hymns, and spirituals from countries around the world. Many of these songs were created out of a chance collaboration between artists spanning time and space; a clergyman pens a hymn, and years later, a composer resurrects those words and sets them to a melody. It may come as no surprise, then, that what people consider to be Christmas classics are among the most-covered Christmas songs of all time . “Silent Night,” for example, had 137,315 recordings according to a 2017 Billboard report. Read on to learn about the rich histories of some of the most beloved Christmas songs that are more than a century old. You may also like: 71 years of Emmy history Written by James Lord Pierpont in 1857 and originally titled “One Horse Open Sleigh,” “Jingle Bells” is one of the most beloved and ubiquitous Christmas carols in existence. In 1965, astronauts Wally Schirra and Thomas Stafford made “Jingle Bells,” the first song heard from space as they orbited Earth aboard the Gemini 6. It may be surprising that this Christmas classic was written as a Thanksgiving song. This traditional English Christmas carol refers to the practice of wassailing, the definition of which has evolved over the years . In the song, wassailing is the practice of traveling door-to-door, wishing good health, and asking for a bit of hospitality and Christmas tidings in return, including a drink from a communal bowl filled with mulled cider or ale called wassail. Other familiar variants of the song include “Here We Come A-Caroling,” and “Here We Come A Christmasing.” Published by hymn writer John Mason Neale in 1853, this carol was based on the life of the virtuous ruler Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia . Wenceslaus I was revered for his piety, morality, and virtue. After his assassination, he was posthumously conferred as a king by Holy Roman Emperor Otto I, which is why people don’t sing of good Duke Wenceslaus. Wenceslaus was elevated to sainthood immediately after his death, and he's considered the patron saint of the Czech Republic. The version of “O Tannenbaum” most of us are familiar with today was written in 1824 by Ernst Anschütz, a well-known organist and composer from Leipzig, Germany. Anschütz’s version was one of many based on a 16th-century German folk song that pays homage to the steadfast nature of the "Tannenbaum," the German word for a fir tree. The song’s association with Christmas began with Anschütz even though no explicit mention of Christmas was made in his original lyrics. Furthermore, most Christmas trees are spruce, not fir. Readers may be more familiar with the song’s English title, “O Christmas Tree.” If you’ve ever wondered what “God rest you merry” means, you’re not alone. This carol’s title is often misinterpreted, mispunctuated, and widely debated. The phrase “rest you merry” is used in the same way we use “rest assured.” It is not an address to merry gentlemen but rather an imperative statement to all gentlemen to be happy, citing the birth of Christ. It’s even referenced in Charles Dickens' classic “A Christmas Carol.” The earliest known print edition of the carol dates back to 1760, but its author is unknown. The carol chronicles the Christian gospel of Matthew in which three biblical magi, commonly known as the three wise men, bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to honor the birth of Jesus. Edmund Sears—a Unitarian pastor in Wayland, Mass.—wrote a five-stanza poem titled “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” in 1849. It was adapted by American composer Richard Storrs Willis in 1850 and set to a melody called “Carol.” The words of this poem-turned-carol are regarded as an account of the issues at the time. Topics referred to in the song include the end of the Mexican-American war and a call for peace among men. Proudly rejoicing the nativity of Jesus, “Go Tell It on the Mountain” was an African-American spiritual dating back to 1865. John Wesley Work Jr. was a composer and ethnomusicologist who compiled hundreds of spirituals and even composed a few, including “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” in his work: “American Negro Songs and Spirituals; A Comprehensive Collection of 230 Folk Songs, Religious and Secular.” Written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865 and published in 1871, this carol explores what the shepherds present at the birth of Jesus must have been thinking when they encountered him. In gospel, hymns, and art, shepherds are central characters in the Nativity of Jesus. The song is set to the familiar melody of “Greensleeves,” a 16th-century English folk song. The exact origins of this popular carol are unknown, but it is most often credited to John Francis Wade. Originally written and printed in Latin as “Adeste Fideles,” it first appeared in Wade’s 1751 collection “Cantus Diversi.” You may also like: Exploring minority representation in the biggest box office winners ever What began in 1818 as a modest performance outside of St. Nicholas parish in Oberndorf, Austria, has become one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Translated into over 300 languages, “Stille Nacht” was written by a priest named Joseph Mohr and composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. The song became popular among traveling folk singers, and before long, it could be heard around the world. The English version we know today called “Silent Night” was not written until 1863. “Stille Nacht” was named an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011 . “Carol of the Bells” is no doubt familiar to you, if not by name, then by melody. The carol was based on an Ukranian folk chant called "Shchedryk,” which was traditionally sung on New Year’s Eve as it spoke of good fortune for the upcoming year. American composer Peter J. Wilhousky adapted the lyrics "Shchedryk” into a Christmas song in 1919 using the original musical arrangement by Ukranian composer Mykola Leontovych. Many artists have covered the carol over the last century, and one of its more popular variants is “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo” by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. “In the Bleak Midwinter” was based on a poem of the same name written by English poet Christina Georgina Rossetti in 1872. English composer Gustav Holst first set the poem to music in 1906. This particular carol was published by Cecil Sharp, a famous conservator of English folk tradition, in 1911. The song is packed with symbolism that dates back to pagan rituals. Holly, representing males, and ivy, representing females, used to be burned together during the pagan festival of Beltane to encourage a fruitful spring. In Christianity, holly is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore during his crucifixion. With this rich history, evergreens like holly and ivy are viewed as symbols of rebirth and renewal, which are common themes celebrated at Christmas time. This carol was based on the poem "Christmas Bells," written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow on Christmas Day in 1863. With an injured wife and a son who joined the union army against his father’s wishes, Longfellow lamented hearing bells on Christmas Day during the American Civil War. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness when goodwill and peace on Earth seemed impossible. The poem was set to music in 1872 by English composer John Baptiste Calkin. Composer Adolphe Adam set the poem to music that same year, and it quickly gained popularity throughout France. When Cappeau denounced the Catholic Church to join the socialist movement, the church responded by denouncing his beloved carol. The song made a resurgence after it was translated into English and introduced in America by John Sullivan Dwight. After visiting Bethlehem in the Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem , Phillips Brooks was inspired to write about his experiences. Brooks, an Episcopal priest, shared the poem he had written with Lewis Redner, his church’s organist, and asked him to create a melody for it so they could perform it at an upcoming Sunday school service. In a single evening, Redner composed the tune that we know today. Reflecting on the success of the carol, Redner stated : “Neither Mr. Brooks nor I ever thought the carol or the music to it would live beyond that Christmas of 1868.” Mistakenly attributed, for many years, to Martin Luther—the seminal figure of Europe’s Protestant Reformation in the 16th century—and even titling early versions of this piece “Luther’s Cradle Song,” “Away in a Manger” is a relatively simple carol with unknown origins. The first record of the text being set to music with the title “Away in a Manger” is found in the 1885 publication “Little Children's Book for Schools and Families.” The carol we know as “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” was originally titled "Hymn for Christmas-Day,” published in 1739 by Charles Wesley, leader of the Methodist movement and brother to John Wesley, the movement’s founder. But it was George Whitefield who adapted the text in 1753 to give us that familiar opener “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” The melody was composed by Felix Mendelssohn and later adapted by William H. Cummings in 1855 to create the song that's popular today. This numeric carol was originally published in England in 1780 in a children’s book called “Mirth Without Mischief.” It is believed to be a type of children's memory-and-forfeit game in which the singer must remember every verse or forfeit something if they make a mistake. His words were set to the tune "Gloria," which was arranged by Edward Shippen Barnes. This Christmas ballad is believed to date back to the 15th century. Unlike many other carols that reference the gospels of Luke or Matthew, this story takes place sometime in between as Mary and Joseph journey to Bethlehem. It is one of the few depictions of Joseph struggling to accept Mary’s pregnancy, evidenced through lyrics such as “O then bespoke Joseph/ With words so unkind,/ Let him pluck thee a cherry/That brought thee with child.” The song was made popular again by Joan Baez’s rendition in 1961. The exact origins of this carol are unknown, but it is believed to be one of the oldest carols still sung today. Dating back to the 12th century, “The Friendly Beasts” is a traditional French carol about the animals present at the birth of Jesus and the gifts they bestowed on him. “Joy to the World” was originally written as a hymn by Isaac Watts. Watt’s adaptation of Psalm 98 interprets Christ as the king of the church and as the king of the world. “Joy to the World” is one of the most recorded Christmas songs of all time . Perhaps the darkest song on this list, “Coventry Carol,” depicts the biblical event “The Massacre of the Innocents” in which King Herod ordered the killing of all male babies under the age of two in Bethlehem. The song takes the form of a lullaby recited to the persecuted children. In Christianity, “The Massacre of the Innocents” is an important part of the broader Nativity story and thus a relevant story in the Christmas narrative. “Coventry Carol” was originally part of a medieval mystery play performed in England called “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.” You may also like: Best Grateful Dead albums of all time Receive the latest in local entertainment news in your inbox weekly!

NEW YORK: Law enforcement in the US state of New York on Friday released “devastating” footage of prison guards beating a Black inmate shortly before he died. The body-worn camera footage, recorded the night of December 9, shows Robert Brooks, 43, brutalized by multiple prison guards, with his face bloodied and neck held. Brooks, an inmate at a northern New York prison serving a 12-year sentence for assault, was pronounced dead later that night. Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, said the video was released to provide “transparency and accountability.” In a statement, Brooks’ relatives said they found “watching the horrific and violent final moments of Robert’s life was devastating for his loved ones.” “We will not rest until we have secured justice for Robert’s memory,” the statement added. The footage shows Brooks restrained on what appears to be a hospital bed with several guards holding him down and beating him. Brooks is later seen sitting up and gets dragged off the bed by his collar. A preliminary autopsy reported in local press said the cause of death was “asphyxia due to compression of the neck,” though full autopsy results remain pending. The footage lacks audio, which James said was because the guards “did not activate” their body-worn cameras despite them being on, leading to the soundless recording. New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the incident in a statement. “We have no tolerance for individuals who cross the line, break the law and engage in unnecessary violence or targeted abuse,” she said. Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin focused on innovation and technology during his fourth and final State of the City address of the year on Wednesday night. The mayor decided to break his State of the City address this year into quarterly speeches, each focusing on a different theme. During the speech on Wednesday, which was held at the Aurora factory and headquarters of Gripple Inc., Irvin said that Aurora has a history of innovation, such as its early adoption of electric street lights, and the city is continuing to embrace that spirit as it heads into the future. “Aurora is no longer simply the City of Lights. We are becoming a city of bytes, bandwidth and breakthroughs. We’re becoming the City of Light Speed,” he said. Irvin declared the state of innovation and technology in Aurora is “community focused, commerce driven and competitively positioned to make Aurora a ‘smart city’ for others to model for years to come.” While the city has made “significant strides” in recent years to be a regional hub of innovation through partnering with tech companies, local startups and academic institutions, it is also working toward a “digitally-inclusive future” through projects like expanding access to broadband internet and “smart city initiatives,” according to Irvin. He said Aurora has attracted investments from businesses like CyrusOne, which have driven economic growth and created high-paying jobs in the community. The city is also the site of the first-ever “smart neighborhood” by Nicor Gas and Habitat for Humanity, which is a planned community with 17 affordable and carbon neutral single-family homes, he said. However, the city also understands that innovation also comes from “the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals with bold ideas,” which is why it has “prioritized fostering an environment where small businesses and startups can thrive” through initiatives like technology incubators, business mentorships programs and funding opportunities, Irvin said. Aurora’s city government has itself made a number of technological advances, including the launch of its new open data portals for many city departments, such as the police department and the mayor’s office of economic development, with more set to be launched soon, he said. Technological advancements like upgraded cameras and cybersecurity upgrades have also helped to make the city safer, Irvin said. The city’s recently launched Destination Aurora app was also highlighted during Irvin’s speech. The app allows users to explore and book downtown dining, shows and hotels all in one place. But innovation within Aurora goes beyond technology, according to Irvin. He said city staff is working to solve social issues through creative programs and practices such as the Financial Empowerment Center and the new Aurora Promise program, which looks to give all kindergarten students in Aurora an educational savings account with a starting balance of $50. Aurora is continuing to look to the future and how new technology will impact it as it is developing a “comprehensive policy strategy and road map” around generative artificial intelligence, according to Irvin. He said that the “initiative aims to address unique challenges and harness the transformative potential” of generative artificial intelligence. rsmith@chicagotribune.com
