Kolkata: Religious leaders from Hindu and Muslim communities in West Bengal on Saturday called for the restoration of peace and amity in trouble-torn Bangladesh and an end to atrocities against the Hindu minority, including women, in the neighbouring country. Prominent leaders of ‘Hindu Sanatani Sangathan’ and ‘All India Imams Organisation’ attended a meet here where they discussed the continuing attacks on minorities and their places of worship in Bangladesh. Voicing concern over the situation, the religious leaders said there was an immediate need for restoration of peace and harmony and the interim government must step in to protect lives and properties in Bangladesh. Faizen Munieer of All India Imams Organisation said, “Every community must enjoy the right to practice its religion without any intimidation. But we are worried and saddened over the situation in Bangladesh from where reports of attacks against minorities continue to pour in. We want an end to these hostilities and stand for the rights of every minority community member everywhere.” Munieer said after another meeting with leaders of different faiths in the country, they will take up with the Bangladesh government the issue of providing safety and security for minority community members there and propose to send a peace delegation if given consent by the governments of both India and Bangladesh. Guam’s largest Catholic procession in honor of Santa Marian Kamalen, the island’s patron saint, will be held on Dec. 9 this year, not Dec. 8 that residents have gotten used to for decades. The change has to do with the day the celebration falls. Archbishop Ryan Jimenez stated in a letter that this year’s celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be on Dec. 9, in adherence to the General Norms on the Liturgical Year and Calendar. Guam’s annual Catholic feast in honor of Santa Marian Kamalen or Our Lady of Camarin, is deeply rooted in faith and tradition for hundreds of years. Some 85% of the island population is Catholic. “Since December 8th falls on a Sunday this year, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, along with our Festal Celebration in honor of Santa Marian Kamalen, will be observed on Monday, December 9th, culminating with our traditional Procession here in Hagåtña,” Father James Benavente, parochial administrator and rector of the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, wrote in a separate open letter to the faithful. The nightly Novena and Masses in honor of the patron saint started on Dec. 1. Santa Marian Kamalen is believed to protect the island from typhoons, quakes, wars and other disasters. “As we come together to honor Santa Marian Kamalen, let us take this time to reflect on the many challenges our people have faced throughout history — whether it be the hardships of war, the devastations of typhoons and earthquakes, or the trials of the recent pandemic,” Benavente wrote. “Through it all, we have witnessed how our Blessed Mother has drawn us closer to God, offering her comfort and guidance.” The procession is a show of Guam’s devotion to its patron saint. It draws thousands of residents from across Guam, and even curious tourists. During the procession, a more than 300-year-old revered statue of Santa Marian Kamalen is placed on a cart or “karosa” adorned with fresh flowers and paraded through the streets of Hagåtña. The statue is believed to date back to the time of Father Diego Luis de San Vitores, who arrived on Guam in June 1668. On Dec. 8, 1941, while people were still in churches celebrating Santa Marian Kamalen, the Japanese started bombing Guam, and the island was plunged into World War II that killed and injured thousands. During the dark days of the war, people hung on to Santa Marian Kamalen and their faith. And every year, the festivities celebrating the Immaculate Conception and honoring Santa Marian Kamalen culminate in a special Mass and procession on Dec. 8, a government holiday. This year, the GovGuam holiday will be observed on Dec. 9. During the COVID-19 pandemic, because of restrictions on social gatherings, the Archdiocese of Agaña decided to put the statue of Santa Marian Kamalen at the back of a truck and paraded her around Guam so people still were able to see her and wave at her from the front of their homes or their villages. Because it’s believed to have existed for more than 300 years, the revered statue of Santa Marian Kamalen survived World War II, earthquakes, fires, and was stolen at least three times from the cathedral. Stories about the statue also abound, passed from one generation to the other. The most popular of which is that the statue was seen floating in the waters of Malesso’ over 300 years ago, guided by two crabs with candles on their backs. There are also superstitious beliefs. In early December 2002, the Guam Legislature removed the Feast of the Immaculate Conception or Santa Marian Kamalen Day from the list of holidays and Typhoon Pongsona hit the island days later, on Dec. 8, 2002. The Legislature moved it back as a government of Guam holiday. Meanwhile, the Torres family of Guam has been taking care of Santa Marian Kamalen’s statue for decades.
